Helen Kelter Skelter get psychedelic on “Sceptre”

Oklahoma’s Helen Kelter Skelter are preparing to release their new EP, Chroma Crawl on June 16th via Tulsa label, Horton Records. Recorded in December 2019 at a church in Oklahoma City, the EP showcases the band’s signature psychedelic style while still keeping it fresh.

No song captures this better than their latest single, “Sceptre.” The slow and lurching song evokes memories of Red-era King Crimson with its shifting time signatures, distorted guitar riffs, and fuzzed out bass.

The wild song is accompanies by an equally wild video. Directed by Chase Spivey, the visuals are an incisive critic on the ever-growing consumption of sensationalized media. Images of a man ranting at a podium with images like the American flag, the cross, and fire flashing behind him is juxtaposed with equally disturbing visuals like a snake handler, armed militants, and more. It makes for a gripping viewing experience.
