Nearing the release of her fantastical album the navy baby, Indyana’s artistry is still in a state of constant evolution, her sound is rich and expansive, earning her acclaim. A classically-trained musician from Melbourne, Indyana has, as a solo artist, supported a slew of fellow up-and-comers, whilst also performing alongside Charm of Finches and Harrison Storm in their band on viola and violin.
Indyana’s most recent release is a gracious blessing. ‘je fais mon univers’, an over five-minute epic, takes the listener to a place of dreamlike heaven. A mastery of classical artistry allows for unorthodox, but deeply emotive, harmonic stories to emerge from the fanciful ethereality. The soft folk foundations are grown into vast palaces of sound design, all led by a heartfelt, expert and intricate vocal performance.
Indyana adds, “from a very young age, ideologies relating to body image have been thrust upon me (and upon us all) so frequently that my own feelings of self-worth have been crushed time and time again. When I started writing this song at 20 years of age, I knew it would be the beginning of a long, difficult process of reframing these negative, and forcibly planted, habit patterns of my mind.”
These themes of self-worth are not only echoed in the lyricism as a combatant to the internal struggle, but also within the emotion of her string prowess. The melodies in the second half soar to great heights, evoking an optimistic struggle. Final moments elevate to a glimmering climax, before the percussion drifts away, leaving a sense of poignance.
“Now, at 24 years of age,” she continues, “I recognise that this song has taught me a lot, even if I haven’t yet fully arrived at my destination of self-love. I hope its listeners will feel equally nurtured by its teachings; that they let it serve as a reminder of how beautiful and wondrous they truly are.”
