We sat down with Irish artist Karl McConnon to discover more about his new release ‘I Got A Woman’, following on from previous single ‘Heaven Has Gained Another Angel’, which we loved! Check out the new release at the bottom of the page.

Tell us about yourself as a band/artist?

As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to the authentic expression of emotions through music. From my early days busking on the streets of Dublin to playing in the pubs and eventually stages across Ireland, my journey has been both a personal and musical evolution. My music is a reflection of my life experiences, aiming to connect deeply with my audience through relatable themes and heartfelt performances.

What got you into music?

My musical journey began at the age of 12 when I found solace in playing the guitar after my mother’s passing. The guitar became not just an instrument, but my voice during a tumultuous time. I honed my skills performing at a local youth center and then took my music to the streets of Dublin. The eclectic street music scene enriched my understanding and passion for music, leading me to study music theory and performance in college. Transitioning from busking to professional gigs, music transformed from a passion into my livelihood.

How would you describe your sound?

Over the years, my sound has matured from a blend of genres to a distinctive style. Recently, I’ve developed a heavier, hard rock sound, a testament to my evolving artistic expression. However, the latest release showcases a softer, pop rock vibe—a throwback to earlier creations with a softer, more Pop Rock vibe to it. This particular song represents a poignant moment in my life, making its release timely and reflective of my current emotional landscape.

What is your favourite venue to play?

The Button Factory is my favorite venue because of its intimate yet vibrant atmosphere. While I’ve cherished playing there, I also aspire to perform at the Olympia Theatre in Ireland. Ultimately, my dream venue is Madison Square Garden—a symbol of success and a pinnacle I aim to reach in my career.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I would be thrilled to collaborate with producers like Bob Rock and Rick Rubin. Their remarkable track records of transforming artists’ sounds and their profound understanding of the music industry make them inspirational figures. Their work not only reflects technical excellence but also a deep commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, aligning with my own musical ethos.

What is your creative process, and do you think it differs from others?

My creative process is highly intuitive, marked by bursts of inspiration where I explore various sounds, riffs, and melodies, recording initial ideas on my 8-track at home. After a few weeks, I revisit these sketches with fresh eyes, refining them into coherent pieces. Writing lyrics is a more introspective and therapeutic, influenced by my use of creative writing to navigate my mental health journey. This approach not only shapes my music but also adds authenticity and emotional depth.

What is special about this song/album to you?

This song is profoundly special as it centers around my wife, celebrating how she has transformed my life. We both came from humble beginnings, met young, and have since grown together, building a beautiful life and family. She has been my rock, and through this song, I share our journey, hoping it resonates with listeners who have experienced similar life-changing relationships.
