We sat down with Irish band RATIOS to discuss the release of their new song ‘Take A Stab’, which comes out today. Have a read through their answers below and make sure to check out the new single at the bottom of the page, and follow them on their journey!
Tell us about yourself as a band/artist.
We are a unit; we push each other hard to extract the best from one another. We hate each other’s ideas and at the same time love them. We play with explosive energy and write what makes us happy – not what we think would “sell” or become popular. We pride ourselves on our live shows. We love the energy we get off the crowd and we love to give it back. We also love ourselves some Keith Duffy on the side.
What got you into music?
Well for myself (Liam), I grew up in a house where music was always being played. But I think the lads can agree with me when I say it was the first time I was at a gig. Never looked back.
How would you describe your sound?
We play fast and loud – we take elements for all our individual influences, mainly from genres like punk, indie, and alternative, but we’ve been described in the past as indie-punk which seems to suit our sound of loud drums and catchy guitar riffs very well.
What is your favourite venue to play?
At the moment it has to be Whelan’s. We always have a great time playing there and we always get a crowd full of energy that’s ready to go. We’re playing there on the 22nd of September and it’s looking to be a great night.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
It’s a tough decision but I reckon it would have to be Idles. Although, we would all love to collab with Wet Leg, QOTSA, Viagra boys. The list is never ending.
What is your creative process, and do you think it differs from others?
I don’t think we do anything special when it comes to writing our music. Dan usually comes up with a riff and brings it to practice and me and Mike add to it. We all work really well together when it comes to writing and we trust each other on what is good or what is bad.
What is special about this song/album to you?
This song is probably our most powerful sounding song. It’s a song we’ve been working hard to perfect since the band Formed back in 2021. It’s been chopped and changed in little bits here and there for years and we were never fully happy with it until a couple months before recording. We made sure it sounded huge and we hope that comes across when you listen to it.
