Joan bring fresh splashes of synth-pop with first single ‘Take Me On’

Self-described as “overalls and electric pianos” on their official Facebook page, Joan are the brand new duo of Allen Thomas and Steven Rutherford — and their very first single Take Me On’ renders the combo utterly enticing.

Orbiting around longing, glimmering synths and syncopated guitars, ‘Take Me On’ is a tantalising account of young love and the innocence of discovery. Pop here is deeply, but harmlessly physical: “Brown hair / those lips / stay close to me / My hand / your hips / hold tight to me”, the opening lyrics come in slow, dreamy waves of keys peppered with steamy female breaths—but it’s a courtship infused with the hope that this love will last forever.

Joan skillfully dim the lights and build anticipation before they break into fresh splashes of bouncy ‘80s synth-pop, filling lovers and listeners alike with that blissful, nostalgic buzz. Even if you’re lying alone in bed, you can always conjure up that fantabulous girl or guy and break into a good old dance.
