Joanna Borne unveils the cinematic ‘Angels’

Nashville-based Canadian Joanna Borne has been releasing music under various aliases since 2014. She’s achieved chart slots, radio places and festival appearances, marking a sound with a raw authenticity, drawn from her experiences as a nurse in inpatient psychiatric hospitals. For her latest work, she’s collaborating with the Grammy-award-winning engineer Jesse Brock.

The first to emerge from this partnership is the new single ‘Angels’, which hails a cinematic momentousness that crashes down on the listener through moments of emotional, sparse piano and climaxes of intensifying percussion and strings.

Joanna’s voice carries us through this orchestral set-up, and in her refrains, she calls out to a higher power. Around her, worlds shatter, eerie synths, glassy keys, and soft, otherworldly undertones create a pull between peace and turmoil, beautifully captured in both the instrumentation and thematic progression.

Joanna explains the track is about “Opinions and theories about the big questions we can’t answer with full certainty may divide us, but these questions still connect us. We all wonder what happens after this life and what it’s really like. We all ask why we’re here and find ourselves on a search for meaning and truth. That search is what I’m expressing in my Song ‘Angels.”
