JYDN HILL has quickly jumped the queue to become one of the most prominent and exciting R&B prospects. In a constantly changing world of music, where genre lines become blurred and tastemakers change, the singer-songwriter has kept it stripped back, clean and simple with his understated vocals and playful melodies. If you didn’t know about him previously, his new E.P ‘Every Lie Is Two Lies’ will make sure you do.
The E.P is a well-flowing offering that is destined to take you on a journey. Tracks such as ‘Lies’ showcases JYDN HILL in his purest form. An understated guitar line is found at the bottom of the track, melodic but rhythmic in it’s own way. On top lies his vocals, packed with emotion and trapped within irresistible melodies, landing softly on top of the bedrock guitar. In comparison, tracks such as “3AM” are a pop infused take on R&B. Playful drums cut through the mix providing an infectious groove. On top, heartwarming synths create a swirling pot of melodies that work hand in glove with heavenly backing vocals. His vocals are once again signature and distinctive.
He cites the project as an exploration of finding his authenticity whilst telling stories of his experiences and past relationships. Elaborating further, he explains: “The making of this project felt like I was rebuilding myself back up from all the things that I went through over the last couple of years, and having the ability to come to terms with those things and put it into music. It was necessary for my growth.”
Speaking on the inspiration for the title, JYDN HILL further shares:
“When you lie it’s really two lies because you’re telling a lie to yourself and also to the other person. For the longest time I felt my art wasn’t authentic to me because I was trying to impress others so much, I felt like I was telling two lies. And now I feel like I’m really being my authentic self. So this really feels like a new beginning for me.”
Organic samples melt with melodic flow throughout the EP, with each track delving into JYDN HILL’s mindset and growth and re-programming of his craft. ‘Every Lie Is Two Lies’ features two brand new tracks, ‘Beginnings (Demo)’ and ‘Stages’.
JYDN HILL shares:
“‘Beginnings’ was one of the first songs I made when I set out on this journey of wanting to tell my story. Where I come from there’s a lot of normalcy around being comfortable in life and pushing our dreams to the side. It’s a small city with not a lot of opportunity and a lot of people get caught up in accepting life as it comes to them. My ex embodied that energy and she didn’t understand the sacrifices that came with me being a musician and me trying to live out a dream. I was working a 9-5 and then after my 9-5 I would be in the studio recording… and she just didn’t understand it. Me deciding to put a demo on this project is symbolic that not everything is perfect or has to be perfect. Why make something it something that it already is, you know? I wanted people to feel the same feeling as when I first made it.”
Discussing ‘Stages’, JYDN reveals:
“I look at ‘Beginnings’ and ‘Stages’ as a two year gap in my life. ‘Beginnings’ was me figuring out who I was at the beginning of the pandemic – figuring out who I was when the world stopped, and Stages was me after 2 years – having figured who I was as a person and an artist.”
With such a fantastic well-flowing piece of work on display, we can’t wait to see where he’ll take this.
