Leon O’Leary unveiled his recent single, ‘Pretend (To Be Saviours)’ today. Hailing from Suffolk, Leon O’Leary’s latest single is a taste of his upcoming EP of the same name, coming to our headphones on the 13th of June. The bold indie-rock single is the second single to be teased off the EP, its vibrant energy and rich soundscape are an enticing peek into Leon O’Leary’s evolution.
With influences of Ben Howard, Bruce Springsteen, and Hozier sewn into his sound, ‘Pretend (To Be Saviours)’ is a showcase of Leon’s rock side. The track bursts into life with thick guitar lines, pounding drums, and splashing cymbals. When Leon’s vocals enter centre stage, his incredible tone and powerful vocal personae sail through the soundscape. Throughout his whole discography, his lyrics are unwaveringly poignant and impactful, and ‘Pretend (To Be Saviours)’ is no different. Speaking on the single Leon says,
“The song is written about virtue signaling and savior complexes in society, blindly following philosophies and ideologies with a shallow understanding in the hopes of appearing ‘righteous’ or morally superior rather than for the greater good. After finishing a demo for the song, me Ryan Meyers (on drums) took the track to North Acre Studios – which we won the opportunity at an award ceremony – and finished recording all the instruments in a day.”
Having cut his teeth playing across the UK, including major festivals such as Latitude, Wild Paths, and Lakefest, Leon O’Leary is no rookie in providing an incredible performance. This has clearly paid off, as his powerful vocal presence and performance personae shine through in this single.
