Lesser Jay’s core vision brings surreality, humour and healthy self-depreciation to musical experiences that speak about the experiences of everyday life. His reputation has been built around solo live-looping shows, which showcase his pop styles fuelled by classical composition.
With his new single ‘Alarm Clock Song’, LJ delivers an emotional heartbreaker in his signature style, a blend of brightening synths and warming pianos as a bed for sometimes uneasy subject matter.
The track is arranged with subtlety, evoking a sense of vulnerability within the notes themselves, perfectly matched to the lyricism, which speaks of the days where there is a weight just to get up and moving. LJ knows just how to tug at a heartstring, and this track hits home at human struggle without a filter. The beauty of self-production means every element serves the same higher purpose, making for a cohesive, authentic final song.
“This song is about that moment where you know you need to get out of bed and do things,” LJ shares, “and you really want to, but somehow that seems impossibly hard. Overall, that feeling is completely absurd but it happens to me all the time. I guess it could be depression or existential crisis but it seems like a feeling a lot of people have, a resistance to do things that are good for us. I live in Colorado where there are lots of beautiful walks and hikes close by. I imagined a scenario for the song where I planned to meet a friend in the morning for a walk (my friend Lucas who is in the music video) and I am fighting the urge to just cancel and go back to sleep, even though I actually do want to hang out and I know we’ll have fun.”
