BRIT school alumni Leiyah released her debut album in 2019, supported by the likes of BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Capital Xtra. This immediate success helped pave the way for her future career, going on to work with Grammy-winning Kevin Tuffy and Reef and perform at Metrofest, Titanfest and in support for Meli’sa Morgan.
Opening with a bold synth lead falling into a gentle guitar arpeggio, ‘NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY’, is immediately expressive. Leiyah’s vocals float with ethereality, opening the door to an infectious hook that makes the track a real earworm.
This repeating line charges into a momentous chorus, filling the atmosphere with fast-paced drum rhythms, wobbling bass lines and an array of shining instrumentation, all led by Leiyah’s passionate vocal prowess and roaring melodies. The balance between hazy verses and glamourous, energetic choruses shows Leiyah’s talent for songwriting, perfectly denoting fantastical pop glitter, and drawing the listener in.
Leiyah shares, “Writing this song was very fun and easy. Years of built-up animosity from dreadful situations finally gave me the courage to say what was really on my mind!”
