Queer black alternative artist LION, debuted earlier this year with his track ‘Not Your Fetish’. A singer, songwriter, producer and dancer hailing from Melbourne, LION has spent the last two years refining his artistry with the team at Tomboi Records, building a pioneering sound that lies between the signature styles of Todrick Hall and Lil Nas X.
After a recent performance to rave crowds at Sydney World Pride, the artist looks ahead to touring oppurtunities and new releases.
LION has just released his sophomore single ‘Attention’, a high-octane firework of a track, hitting you with hyper-pop sensibilities from the get go. Heavily-processed, glitchy vocal chops provide a foundation for thumping drum rhythms and a distorted bass. Over the top, LION’s emotive rap style feels controlled and aggressive, accentuating the eclectic instrumentation that surrounds it. The overall production seems ever-evolving, constantly building on the energy of the track with new sounds that explore a wider sonic landscape.
LION shares, “I wrote this song in a period of my life where I sought so much external validation that I nearly lost myself. So I wrote about the progression of someone who broke down because they couldn’t nurture their own soul. But of course, I had to make it camp, catchy and chaotic. I think there are so many distractions and coping mechanisms we develop to avoid ourselves; so let’s commit to the journey of listening to ourselves, especially when it’s painful”.
‘Attention’ is out now, give it a listen below!
