Lisa Canny is crowned UK “Future Music’s” Songwriting Champion 2016

Mayo born harpist, banjo player and singer-songwriter, Lisa Canny, has just been crowned UK “Future Music’s” Songwriting Champion 2016. Best known for her enchanting covers and sold out live performances, Canny is a notably talented musician. Gifted with empowering confidence and a charming sense of honesty, the most consummate stage of her career is clearly imminent.

The competition took place in Camden last night, Sunday 22nd January, and saw Lisa taking first place with her original song, “Painted By You”. The track, co-written by Jonathon Whiskerd, tells the story of being in love in London and though it’s yet to be released, you can listen to a live version of it here.

Relentlessly pushing musical boundaries, Lisa’s innovative approach and evident penchant for songwriting also saw her performing on The Late Late Show on Friday. Presenter, Ryan Tubriby, introduced Canny as “crossing over so many [genres] that it was impossible to define”. Trubidy went on to suggest that she could represent Ireland in the Eurovision next year; something that started a #canny4eurovision trend on Twitter.

With a release on the horizon along with her first UK tour and third Irish tour, 2017 is already looking like a very exciting prospect for the 7-time All-Ireland champion musician from the West.
Canny will be performing in St. Werburghs Church, 29th January, as part of the “Women in Folk” night with Templebar TradFest 2017. She will also be playing Garbo’s, Castlebar, 25th February. Tickets for both are on sale now.
