Listen to ‘Poppy’, the stunning debut from Queer-pop artist Ris

London-based artist Ris sets pride aside on his synth-drenched debut single.

‘Poppy’ sees the rising queer-pop artist facing past dating mistakes against an intense backdrop of swelling synths and brooding basslines. Listen to it below.

It’s a promising listen from the newcomer, who already demonstrates a steadfast dedication to frankly personal lyricism delivered with quivering, intimate vocals like a gut punch.

Detailing the inspiration behind his debut, the Bulgarian-born singer said: “Growing up queer in Eastern Europe was hard, so to stay safe, I’d shy away from being too vulnerable with people.

I approached dating with a similar mindset, until I fell in love with a boy who was really in tune with his emotions and helped me get more comfortable with showing mine. ‘Poppy’ is essentially about how badly I wanted to save the relationship after it broke down.

This is no doubt a tantalising look at what’s to come from the talented singer-songwriter, and with a slew of new releases in the works for 2019, he’s certainly one to keep an eye on.
