It’s the start of something new for the Manchester-based collective Marouli. The first taste of their upcoming second album Tall Tales from a Distant Uncle Volume 2, that something new is entitled ‘Something Serious’, bringing a groove-driven approach to a combination of brass lacing, indie charm and funky flourish, all with the soul of a storyteller.
The lineup features a range of musicians, all with the qualifications to weave depth and complexity into their welcoming, ambitious, and fun sound. A bit of a sway, a bit of something choppy, the harmonies bloom and lift you into new sonic locations, evoking this considered but alive feel.
Graham McCusker, songwriter and vocalist, shares, “I wanted each song to be a ‘tall tale’, as Billy Connolly would say, so a wee miniature moment of time and tale being told in each song.”
Formed in 2018, Marouli are a group thriving in their collaboration, every moment feels full of keys, sax, trumpet, top-to-bottom energy packed with musical colour. The new record arrives after McCusker has beaten cancer for the second time, and his clarity seems to be better than ever.
