The Geogia-based artist Marquita Antoinette Brown brings forth a soundscape that blends slow jams, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Making music influenced by the classics, she takes on new perspectives with provocative new sounds.
Marquita Brown’s latest track is the nostalgic and soulful, ‘Red Tape’. Filled with the sounds of alternative blues, the expansive instrumentation ranges from flowing and hazy lead guitar melodies to cinematic string sections. Soft and wistful keys outline counter melodies in the high range whilst punchy kicks and grooving bass lines take hold of the lows and fill them with motion. Vocally, Marquita brings a performance nostalgic of the blues era, whilst injecting distinctly modern sensibilities throughout, creating a truly enticing blend.
Marquita adds, “Throughout this song there are religious and conservative metaphors used to speak about all people and institutions who want others to conform or ‘fit’ into an agenda. This is usually because they’ve either done so themselves or put on a highly calculated, forward-facing facade – all while wishing or doing otherwise privately. They become unnerved with other’s freedom to do as they please and want some form of repentance or punishment, to derail a free spirit, to create “Red Tape”.”
