Hailing from Edinburgh, Quiet Houses pull the curtain on their latest alt-pop single ‘mark/james’ as they look to make a name for themselves as boundary-pushing creative talents. The follow-up to ‘Buttercup’, released in June, the single stands out as an alluring slice of contemporary pop.
Right from the outset, ‘mark/james’ quickly makes itself known. Whether it’s the pulsating drum machine, the shimmering guitar melody or the dream-laden vocals, there is something about this single that makes it feel truly otherworldly. Coupling the spirit of alt-pop counter culture, the single touches on elements of indie-pop and hyper-pop as it navigates its silk-like, ethereal grooves. Though instrumentally relatively simplistic, it’s the sheer greatness of the songwriting and performance behind it that makes this track glow – seemingly like the only light that’s on in an otherwise dark room.
Commenting on the single, the pair explain, “‘mark/james’ is a song for all our brave sisters and brothers out on the front lines of dating in London. It’s about navigating casual relationships in a world of £7 pints and flat shares with 8 people. It was written in our first London flat in Walthamstow; it was summer, and we were both working full-time hospitality jobs, squeezing in music-making whenever we could in random pockets of time.”
