Roxy Rawson hails from a Mormon community. Her upbringing has tinged her music, as she often discuses her relationship with faith, however she also takes inspiration from a handful of different cultures. Traveling to Paris in her late teens, she studied classical violin and piano at Conservatory Paris VI, it was here that she joined the African choir. As her career progressed, so did her sound, her career taking her to London as music teacher in inner city schools.
‘Running Up That Hill’ is her latest offering and comes in the form of an atmospheric single. Heartwarming pianos, ethereal sounds and softly penned vocals create a hauntingly beautiful sound that works hand in glove with the music video. The music video showcases a incredible visuals, showcasing thought-provoking emotions of solace, hope and empowerment.
Speaking about the single, Rawson shares: “I recorded this with Alex Franklinos at his Shrunkenheads Recording Studio in Nunhead, London. It started out just with the violin. I had gone to London for a month to work with Al on arrangements for my album.
We were exploring different kinds of sounds, synthesizers and effects. I enjoyed the different soundscapes we could create and what he added to my orchestrations. I had spent a lot of time out of being able to make music due to health issues, so this was like a little residency to get me creating again and learning from a producer. We arranged a couple of songs which will be on the album in the arrangements we found together.”
After falling severely ill in 2012 with Lyme Disease and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, her music career took an extended hiatus. Her recovery in 2018 enabled her to work on music again as she released her long awaited debut album ‘Quenching the Kill’ to rave reviews. Fastforwading to 2023, we will see the release of her anticipated follow up album, with lush arrangements that draw on her diverse musical heritage and provide a rich backing to her unyielding Pre-Raphaelite vocals. With such a profound sound already achieved, we can’t wait to hear what’s on it.
