The latest of the latest to emerge from the vibrant Brighton scene, SAD DADS is comprised of best-friend duo, Dan Noble and Owen Bullock, bringing with them a rotating crew to bring their sound to life. They’ve appeared at Alt Escape and 234 Festival, and been noted by radio and press already, so their official entry of debut single ‘Surf Instructor’ clearly marks the start of a wider journey.
The new track is built on punk-edged energy pitted against summer indie brightness. The initial distortion is quickly under the shining guide of a ceaseless electric guitar glimmer. The telephone-esque vocal processing takes over the spoken word, its peaking saturating for a live feel.
Ultimately, the uniqueness of their sound lies in the lyricism, able to perform with a tongue-in-cheek, self-aware attitude, by rooting down in deprecating expression. It’s driven, infectious and a stroke of brilliance for the newcomers. If they continue this energetic, authentic purity, they’ll no doubt rise to the top.
Speaking on the slightly self-cynical nature of the track, the band share, “Surf instructor is us poking fun at the mundanity of working boring jobs and never feeling good enough. Of course, you’ll end up being a surf instructor if the one thing you can’t do is swim ~ that’s just good old Sod’s Law at work. It was written last summer in one afternoon of pure dads-induced genius and recorded by our dear friend Matt Pugh in his flat, and mixed by Brighton finest Bobby smiles!”
