Sam Huber releases steamy new soul-centric live single, ‘You Called Me In The Morning’

Recorded live at E-Studios in Helsinki, Sam Huber‘s new single, ‘You Called Me In The Morning‘ (from his recently released double LP UP & DOWN) re-imagines vintage vibes to deliver one of the finest examples of his patented ‘Future Soul’ mindset to date.

“I actually wrote this song a long time ago,” Huber notes. “It sort of just sat in a drawer for a few years and I never really worked on it beyond it’s original demo state; it’s early on the timeline as far as Future Soul goes. When we were putting UP together I remembered it and thought about how I had initially seen it as a really traditional song, very much inspired by first wave soul artists like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. But I had to do something more. When you’re writing something that’s in the vein of a classic soul ballad or soul song you can’t make it 100% retro, that’s been done. The key—and this is what the Future Soul and Future Funk concepts are based on—is that you have to put your own stamp on it by mixing in modern elements and making the arrangements and melodies a bit non-traditional. The unexpected subtleties are what make it just a bit unpredictable, from a traditional standpoint, and set it apart. We played most of UP at this live session, but we let the songs breathe a bit. This version of ‘You Called Me In The Morning’ is a great example of how Future Soul is ever-changing; we let the song stretch its legs, we were jamming, and extended it at the end.”

While the album version is a powerful love song, this live take goes a few heated steps further. Propelled by producer Tomás Doncker’s subtle-yet-vital guitar work playing perfectly off Huber’s steamy baritone vocals, it mines a groove that can only be described as sexy.
