Soccer Mommy releases affecting new track ‘Still Clean’

It’s been only just over a month since Sophie Allison, aka Soccer Mommy, announced the release of her first “proper” album Clean, but with the release just a few weeks off she’s wasting no time in getting people hyped up for it. She has already released the fuming ‘Your Dog‘, the frenetic ‘Cool‘ and now comes the downbeat album opener ‘Still Clean‘.

Still Clean‘ is a deeply affecting skeletal indie song, on which Allison fully lays out her desperate emotions, using simple lyricism to describe her feelings and making them resonate with a poignant vocal performance. Her repeated lamentations of “only what you wanted for a little while” in the song’s heartbreaking chorus serve as both an earworm and a knife to the heart – making this a truly accomplished track.

Allison says of the song ‘Still Clean’ discusses the hopelessness of waiting for someone who’s abandoned you… It uses this idea of being ‘clean’ to explain the feeling of being stuck waiting for someone, hoping that they haven’t moved on from you. When you are stuck in this place of waiting you kind of put your world – and you memory of them – on pause. But as the song shows, sometimes people keep moving while you’re standing still, and sometimes you’re the only one who’s left clean.

Soccer Mommy’s new album Clean comes out through Fat Possum on 2nd March .
