Square Dance Caller release the infectious new single ‘London Underground’ alongside music video

Square Dance Caller is the latest project from Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and brothers Brendan and Michael Etherington. In 2021, when the band was formed, the pair were joined by Mat Hooler on keys and James Manning on bass. Live they are regularly joined by Melbourne saxophonist Bella McMahon. They’ve been lauded by tastemakers and indie music blogs and garnered radio play across Europe and America. The band now look ahead to their first UK tour this Autumn.

Their latest single ‘London Underground’ is as infectious as it is rebellious. The band bring together an almost unsettled piano line, pairing it with heavily distorted synth bass and driving drums to lead us into the main body of the song. Where nostalgic and spacey electric guitars fill the space. The vocal performance captures all of the elements that the instrumentation brings to the table, eerie, assertive, unruly, with a melancholy undertone.

The band share on the single, “The inspiration for the song came from people-watching on a trip to the UK. The Underground is such an intricate labyrinth used by millions of people everyday and they all use it for different reasons… it seemed like a good idea for a song.”

The track now has a video to go alongside it, taking us into that people watching mindset, showcasing the business of the city through black and white visuals. We see the day to day monotony of the commuter, with occasional sprinkles of real humanity.
