The brainchild of duo Ian Hilvert and Ivory Snow, who are joined live by a broad range of talented musicians, Sungaze offers something residing at the emotional centre of dream pop, country and grunge, the contradictory tendencies falling into a transcendent and heart-capturing product.
The band’s latest single arrives with themes of anger and dissociation, capturing these unsettling feelings within a dazed and angelic soundscape. This dichotomy between shimmering gold and shadowed darkness brings further depth to the lyricism, their honesty shattering the boundaries of the music and leaving the glass to fall at the audience’s feet.
Ian shares his side of the single, “This song explores my habits of daydreaming, dissociation and anger. The title ‘Lost My Head’ is very fitting because it’s how I would describe the repercussions of all 3 of these experiences. The rest of the lyrics came to me from doing my best to be self-aware of my tendencies, and the chords and sounds were chosen to capture the mental struggles that came from the awareness.”
These changing feelings and breaking down of self-constructed walls are echoed in the waves of instrumentation. The steady beats and forward-moving chug of guitars take on a more alternative essence, whilst the psychedelia remains to melt the pain. The intricacies of the noise have purposeful chaos around them, an unsure emotion that only concludes as everything finally falls away.
Ivory continues, “When I was writing the bridge, my intention was to expand upon the themes Ian had already set in motion, and also to add in a little subtle advice. Both of us tend to experience “feeling permanence”: where it can be easy to have a good day and assume that’s just how it’s going to be forever. That way of thinking can get you into trouble when it’s a bad day, though. We are always reminding each other that feelings are transient and nothing lasts forever, good or bad.”
