After connecting at Oklahoma’s music production school, the synth-pop duo The Ivy, made up of singer-guitarist Wyatt Clem and keyboardist Shawn Abhari has since been touring and honing their live show whilst sharing the stage with groups like LANY and The Band Camino. Following the release of their EP and a berth on the Lollapalooza 2020 lineup, The Ivy is now working on new music. Coming back in strong with the new single ‘Hurts Just Right’ with rhythms reminiscent of the 1980s. the new single captures the bittersweetness of letting someone go, even though you know it’s the right thing to do.
About the new single, the duo reveals:
Shawn explains how “This song was a demo started by Wyatt with a drum loop, a few guitars, and vocals. We brought the demo to Rob Cohen (Grammy-winning producer: Portugal the man) and Blake Mares, who helped us re-imagine and produce the song.”
When discussing the idea of ‘Hurts Just Right’, Wyatt says that “the inspiration came from that feeling you get when you know it’s best to let somebody go, but it obviously still hurts. It’s a very bittersweet feeling which we think fits perfectly with the style of the song.”
With just under 200k monthly Spotify listeners, current popularity and accolades, and a forthcoming summer tour, The Ivy are cementing themselves as artists to watch, promising us more great shows and songs laced with nostalgic indie alt-pop sounds.
