Debuting their biting pop noir sound with the single ‘Drop A Coin’ just last month, The Open Flames have already sent out a feverish wave, appearing on playlists and music blogs. The group is a patchwork of US and British sounds, comprised of Sleepy Kitting, Harvey Danger and Say Yes, Do Nothing. A debut album, Same Time Next Year, is on the horizon, their sound is coming into its own, showcasing more individuality with the heartbreak of ‘Eat Alone’
With the new track, the band bring a raw atmosphere, letting the lyrical songwriting speak for itself. Guitars ring out as subtle bass tones and firm drums settle the rhythm section. The vocals are quietly poetic, embodying a narrator who seems equally pained by the situation. Moving through the track, they get steadily more frustrated, the introduction of light harmonies adding to their more gritty attitude. It holds a different essence to ‘Drop A Coin’, showcasing the versatility of an exciting new band.
The Open Flames explains, “‘Eat Alone’ is about when you want to help someone who’s hurting, and they don’t want the help,” explains Dave Eastman. “It’s a heartbreaking situation that we try to show through a caregiver’s pleas — and memories — and the noise of the song.”
