The Valmonts Return with “Cry & Get A Little Drunk”: A Gritty Anthem of Love and Resilience

Dublin-based indie-rock sensation, The Valmonts, are back with a bang, releasing their latest single, “Cry & Get A Little Drunk”. This anthemic track is just a taste of what’s to come from their upcoming EP, “Living In A Paranoid Trance”, set to drop on October 20, 2023, under Watts Hill Records. With a sound reminiscent of noughties indie-rock and a flair for unforgettable melodies, The Valmonts are poised to take the music scene by storm once again.

“Cry & Get A Little Drunk” is an electrifying track that embodies the thrill of infatuation with its bold sound and straight-to-the-point lyricism. The Galway outfit pulls no punches, crafting a song that’s rich in grit, featuring big drums, boisterous riffs, and an unforgettable hook. Clash Magazine describes it as a journey back to the golden era of indie-rock, and we couldn’t agree more.

Originally hailing from Galway, The Valmonts have steadily built a reputation for themselves in the indie music scene. They’ve also taken their electrifying live performances to sold-out venues, including Whelans Upstairs in Dublin and headlining the Bloom Festival at Phoenix Park. Their international reach was solidified when they featured on RTE 2XM’s ‘Passport Approved Show’, broadcast to over 50 stations worldwide.

The Valmonts’ passion for music was ignited at a young age, as they were exposed to the sounds of the 80s through their parents. This era, along with 90s and 00s classics, heavily influenced their music. Their love for music deepened while playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City on the PS2, where they fell in love with the soundtrack. These influences, combined with their shared love for bands like New Radicals and INXS, have culminated in The Valmonts’ distinct indie-rock sound with a pop sensibility.

Produced by Stuart Gray, known for his work with artists like Glen Power (The Script) and Hozier, “Cry & Get A Little Drunk” is an earworm that’s impossible to shake off. The track opens with a tantalizing guitar lick and a pulsating bassline that lay the groundwork for Darragh Whyte’s raw and impassioned vocals. While the verses reflect introspection and calm, the chorus bursts forth with unbridled emotion, driven by powerful electric guitar chords. The lyrics touch upon the universal theme of lost love, resilience, and the solace found in memories and a glass of wine. It’s a song that will undoubtedly linger in your mind long after the last note fades away.

The Valmonts describe the creation of “Cry & Get A Little Drunk” as a natural and collaborative process that unfolded during a rehearsal. With Darragh’s pre-existing lyrics as a starting point, the band came together to craft a new masterpiece. Recording the song proved to be an adventure in itself, with so many guitar tracks that they lost count. This dedication to their craft shines through in every note of the single.
