Thrillhouse have been making a name for themselves with a host of radio and press support, with KEXP, Radio X and BBC Introducing all wanting a piece. Since forming, the duo have built feverish anticipation that has led to multiple sold out shows across the UK. Members Sam Strawberry and Jack Nielsen gained their name from a nod to an old Simpsons episode.
Thrillhouse’s latest release is new album ‘Something About This Place’. Across the 11-track, 45-minute runtime the band epitomise their alternative-indie-come-alternative-country sound, creating something truly fresh an unique. The vocals are bittersweet, taking a hardened, wise perspective with an added element of wistfulness. Instrumentally, acoustic and electric guitars, synths and piano work together to create a sense of folky elegance and fragility to the tracks. Overall, the dichotomy of ethereal acumen and a carefree attitude, distinct vulnerability and deep sense of confidence culminates in exciting feelings that draw the listener into the world Thrillhouse creates.
The band explains the album, “The concept for the album came about on a cold night in Sam’s pokey little flat trading childhood stories with Jack to the soundtrack of ‘Born In The USA’. They dusted off the lid, opened the box and began plucking out memories for a hit of that bittersweet nostalgia. Whilst focussing on reminiscing their childhood, each tune laments the time, energy and love spent on a seemingly fruitless endeavour of pursuing music.
Writing ‘Something About This Place’ was an acceptance of things past, a letting go, que sera sera “what will be, will be” and all that. Perhaps we’re still grasping. There’s no glamour in it – looking back. The world certainly wasn’t purer. But ours felt bluer, brighter and maybe something has been lost, left behind.”
