You’d be forgiven if you’d forgotten about Electric Six. The band that stormed into the mainstream in 2003 with the mega-hit ‘Danger! High Voltage’ has failed to hit the same highs in the years since. Dick Valentine and company have continued to work diligently, though, and have made a whopping 14 albums since their debut record, Fire.
The latest release, ‘Turquoise‘, has all the elements that Electric Six fans will be looking for in an album. Indeed, the 2023 offering has been described as a return to form for the Detroit-based band.
New Album Has All the Aspects That Make Electric Six Great
There’s no doubt that Electric Six are among the most unique acts in the world, with their style equating to a complex blend of genres including comedy rock, disco, and garage. When listeners pick up a record from the band that boomed in the early 2000s, they want to hear something that’s completely fresh and original. Luckily, the new album doesn’t disappoint. Turquoise has been referred to as a return to the band’s roots, and one that could potentially propel them back to the forefront of popular culture if it’s marketed correctly.
One of the reasons why Fire was such an incredible hit 20 years ago was the fact that the record was packed full of catchy and well-crafted tunes. The perfection of that album has even led some critics to consider it among the best debuts ever released. Turquoise mirrors that offering in many ways and, two decades on, Electric Six has managed to release another album that’s completely stacked with great songs. Along with the usual hilarious lyrics, there are plenty of earworm-style riffs that will have listeners wearing out the repeat button.
Electric Six Have Failed to Recapture Early Highs
Despite having worked tirelessly since they burst onto the scene in 2003, Electric Six have never lived up to their early hits. Danger! High Voltage was one of the biggest hits of the decade, and it has stood the test of time as well. Along with offering fresh music and catchy lyrics, it also featured Jack White on backing vocals. The song was so iconic that it even went on to inspire music-themed slot games, with the Danger High Voltage Megapays slot from Big Time Gaming. The reel spinner takes direct inspiration from the song and has some electrical features to keep players spinning.
Danger! High Voltage wasn’t the only massive hit that Electric Six enjoyed in the early 2000s. They also released Gay Bar from the same album, and that reached number five in the UK singles chart. The song was nominated for various best single awards, and the video won Video of the Year from multiple music publications. In fact, the band was huge in the UK, where they enjoyed the most success in those early years.
For the first time in years, it feels like Electric Six has some material at their disposal that they could use to bounce back into the mainstream. Some of the tracks on Turquoise are just as catchy and memorable as the early hits from Fire.
