The build up to the release of The War On Drugs‘ fourth album, A Deeper Understanding, has been steadily growing. With a regular stream of songs being released, each of them as grand as the last, from the 11-minute ‘Dreaming Of A Place‘, to the contemplative ‘Strangest Thing,‘ to the desperation of ‘Holding On‘. Now comes the most compelling song yet, ‘Pain’.
As the title suggests, ‘Pain‘ finds Adam Granduciel cutting deep lyrically, but more overwhelming than that is The War On Drugs’ typically lush instrumentation and production. Unfurling on a bed sparkling and tangling guitars, Granduciel’s voice sounds more impassioned than ever; “I was staring into the light /when I saw you in the distance I knew that you’d be mine /am I moving back in time or just standing still?” The soul-searching song glides magnificently through its near 6-minutes, with many guitar melodies and bass interjections punctuating its course, before it doubles down for a behemoth rocking finish.
