Today, Music Crowns meets with Indie-pop newcomer band Kid Cupid to discuss their new single ‘Siren’.

  • Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to talk with me today! Could you introduce yourselves to the readers who may not know Kid Cupid?

Thanks for having us! And hey, we’re Kid Cupid, an indie electro four piece from London. We all know each other either through work or socially and had been working on different musical projects until about a year ago. One day we decided to get together for a jam and immediately clicked. Before we knew it song ideas started pouring out of us and here we are!

  • Where did the name ‘Kid Cupid’ come from?

We’d like to say that there is some profound meaning behind the name, but in fact it was hundreds of drunken Whatsapps at 2am between the band that did the job. Cupid was originally thrown out there and someone chucked the Kid on and that was it…Kid Cupid was born!

  • Who would you like your sound to be compared to and why?

Ian would like our sound to be compared to a mix of Blondie, with a good measure of The Faint thrown in and a sprinkle of Nile Rodgers. We’re already being compared to bands like London Grammar, Portishead, Chvrches and Young Galaxy, which is so cool. Hopefully we blend a good amount of pop with some nice synthy dance tracks and meaningful lyrics that are open to interpretation. This results in hooks that stay in your head for days on end (well they do for us anyway).

Hopefully as we release more tracks, and we’ve got a few more ready to go, we think you’ll hear all our influences coming through!

  • I love your new single Siren– some really interesting lyrics there! Could explain a little more about this?

Thank you! Laura wanted to write about something other than love and relationships. She focused on creating ambiguous lyrics but that also tell a story, most importantly words that people can lock into. We felt the need to echo how unsettled everyone is feeling and wanted to create something anthem/chant like. To us it’s a battle cry.

  • Why did you choose Siren as your debut single and not another track you’ve written?

We’ve been writing lots of material but Siren was the moment we all felt like we found our sound, it had us all excited and dancing in the studio. Something really clicked and we just knew this had to be the one to introduce us.

  • Could you each tell me a unique fact about yourselves?

Laura is a Geordie and really allergic to peanuts….

Ian spends all of his spare time fishing, our guitarist and keyboardist, John, once went on a Tinder date with a girl who turned up in a sparkly blue prom dress. And James has hobbit feet, really!

  • You’re relatively new on the live scene. Can you tell us which is your favorite gig you’ve done so far and why?

Our favourite, and probably most bizarre gig was at a private party in a barn in Dorset. We were playing late – maybe 1 am, so everyone was pretty drunk by then. It felt like everyone in the local area was there – a bit nerve racking as we’d only formed a month previously, but the buzz was amazing.

Needless to say the night wasn’t without its casualties- we lost Ian just after our set finished. An older lady seemed to be taking a shine to him – he’s been pretty cagey about what happened that night, but we all have our suspicions.

  • After the release of Siren, what’s next for you in the near future?

We’ve been constantly writing the past few months. It’s great because we think we’ve really pushed ourselves and we’ve got a collection of tracks that we’re really happy with now.

We’ve been collaborating with some of our music genius mates – one of the tracks on the new EP features a wall of cellos, giving it a bit of a film score feel.

Our live show has also been completely re-shaped, it’s so epic now and we’re looking forward to revealing a few surprises at our upcoming London shows in June and July.

Siren will be out 3rd June 2016.
