Drake’s Summer Sixteen tour becomes the highest grossing in hip-hop history

Drake has made hip-hop history this week with his Summer Sixteen tour being named the highest-grossing hip-hop tour of all time.

Joined by Future, the Views rapper performed 54 shows over a three-month period spanning the length of the United States. The July to October tour is said to have accumulated a grand total of $85 million (£69,173,177) in tickets alone.

Drake injured his ankle towards the end of the string of shows which resulted in some dates being cut short. Had the injury not occurred, the tour could have gone on to make even more money than recorded, boosting the final total. The figures for the Summer Sixteen tour were collated by Poll Star Pro but it was stated by XXL that even more money possibly could have been made.

Although the highest grossing tour of 2016 was credited to Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band amassing $268.3 million (£218.4m), Drake knocked Jay-Z and Kanye West off the all-time hip-hop top spot. Jay-Z and West managed to rake in $75 million (£61,035,156) between them during their 2011 and 2012 Watch The Throne tour.

Drake is set to return to the UK later this month embarking on his Boy Meets World tour. London will play host to eight of the shows with Young Thug rumoured to support. Check out the dates for Drake’s Boy Meets World tour below and some Summer Sixteen from Madison Square Garden, New York City.
