Future Music Festival Asia 2013 @ Sepang International Circuit

For a 2nd year in a row Malaysia has hosted the “Future Music Festival Asia” drawing crowds of 40,000+ party lovers to Sepang International Circuit. (The home of the Malaysia Grand Prix) and with an attractive lineup, it was not difficult disappoint.

The Main Arena ‘Warrior Dance’ Arena  hosted some of the best electronic acts around, headlined by 90 minute ‘Prodigy’ set. The ‘Flamingo’ Arena was more of an Popular music based arena, headlined by Bloc Party, and staging the likes of ‘Rita Ora’, ‘Fun’ and ‘PSY’. The ‘Gnome’ Arena was more of a mixed international feel ranging from Old Skool Hip Hop to Korean, Japanese & local Malaysian acts. The ‘Red Bull’ Hanger was pretty rammed with mostly local acts & DJ’s with the exception of a couple such as the Liverpudlian electronic band ‘Ladytron’.

The Set times were as follows on their dedicated arenas.

After a some microphone issues, that kept the crowd waiting more than 30 mins, ‘De La soul’ rocked it out, commencing their set with some new stuff, and then taking it back to the 1989 with the classic  ‘Me Myself & I’ from the ‘3 feet high and rising’ album finishing up with 1991 classic ‘Ring Ring Ring’ from the album ‘De La Soul is Dead’ .

Slighty overlapping this was a bit of a extraordinarily all over the place set from ‘Temper Trap’ or also could be referred to as too much effort, as they went a bit mental at times.

Next on the Scene were ‘Naughty by Nature’ who were being overlapped by ‘Rita Ora’ but I opted for the Old Skool Hip Hop approach. The crowd exploded with energy, when they rocked the stage with their Grammy award nominated classics ‘OPP’ & ‘Hip Hop Hooray’ whilst blazing tracks from their ’96’ Grammy award winning album ‘Poverty’s Paradise’.

And to top it off, when ‘Naughty by Nature’ Performed Hip Hop Horray, they invited ‘De La Soul on stage to perform. Wow…!!

Next up was a bit was another big but slight overlap, with ‘Zeds Dead’  & ‘PSY’ on at the same time. PSY only has one known song, it was a novelty to see him, even tho how annoying the whole ‘Gangnam Style’ is. But after seeing him, I respect him more for admitting that he had a lucky break, and his next track would be no where as big.

Next for me, the ‘Pulp Fiction’  influenced ‘DC’ & ‘Hooks’ who make  the Canadian duo ‘Zeds Dead’ rocked the crowd with their Sublime talents, forcing the crowd (including me) to go fricking nuts to their remix of ‘Breathe’

Following that UK artist ‘John Gooch aka ‘Feed Me’ braced the crowd with his electro vibe with much of it chilling them out & raising energy levels, in preparation to blow it all on the acts still to come. Still a great set and worth every second.

Second to last on the main stage was familiar character named ‘Jake Stanczak’ who every knows as ‘Kill The Noise’ and boy did he do that. He smashed the atmosphere with bass lines and wobbles which could possibly hit a 9 on the richter scale, causing the crowd(including me again) to go nuts with Stylish moves, pointless dances and grinding with dubstep chicks. ‘Kill The Noise’ was overlapped by ‘Bloc Party’ but I opted for the bass masochist.

Finally the Headliners were up ‘ The Prodigy’, the last time I had seen them live was in 1996 for ‘The Fat of the Land’ Launch, so this was always going to be special. They produced 90 minutes of insane, crazy, bonkers, mental, adrenalin rushing lunacy. They Pretty much covered every track since the early 90’s bring back the old skool vibe, and absolutlely killing the crowd with ‘Poison’. The mosh pit at the front was immense, every man for himself, by there was no violence as we understood what carnage the ‘Prodigy’ would cause.
