Hip-hop is officially bigger than rock for the first time ever

Hip-hop/R&B has overtaken rock as the most consumed genre in the United States, a new study has found.

The study was carried out by the Nielson group, a global measurement and data analytics company who “market research, insights and data about what people watch, listen to and buy” in the US.

Their latest findings show that in 2017 “R&B/Hip-Hop became the most dominant genre, with seven of the top 10 most-consumed albums coming from that genre.” The increase in the genre’s power is due to “a 72% increase in on-demand audio streaming,” the report explains.

The top 10 artists were led by hip-hop/R&B moguls Drake and Kendrick Lamar with the likes of The Weeknd, Future and Eminem also placing in the top 10. The only artists not labelled as hip-hop/R&B in the top 10 were Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

It was also reported that Latin music made history last year with Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s Spanish-language hit ‘Despacito‘ was the biggest song in terms of activity (sales and on-demand audio streaming equivalents) – not forgetting the Justin Bieber featuring remix which topped the Hot 100 chart.
