Who is answering the questions?
Hey my name is Jarryd and I play bass and do backup vocals. I’m Tom and I do the vocalisation. My name is Declan, I play guitar.
How did Patient Sixty-Seven originally form?
Jarryd: Patient formed between Tom and Dylan, a lot of ideas flew around between them and they started working on the imbalance EP. Then they got Declan who was originally on bass. He moved to guitar and took JL and I into their arms and asked us to make sweet music together. Tom: What Jarryd said, now we’re like one big happy, all-male family.
How did you get to the band name Patient Sixty-Seven, and what does it mean to you?
Jarryd: Patient ’67′ is actually a reference to the movie shutter Island, everyone in the band and people I talk to say its an amazing movie but I haven’t actually watched it. Some people have a go at me and say how can I be in a band with a reference to something I haven’t watched but I find it funny, might keep it that way. Tom: It’s a masterpiece starring Leo, I was pretty shocked when we found out Jarryd hadn’t seen it. But honestly, the name of the band really does hold something a little special for me. I guess it goes back to the picture it paints during the film, in finding yourself, being yourself, accepting yourself. It’s about looking at yourself in the mirror and being honest with you are, and what you are. It’s cool to have a name behind you that you believe in, and I’m glad it came up early on and kinda stuck!
For an unfamiliar reader, how would you describe the sound of Patient Sixty-Seven?
Jarryd: Patient has an energetic sound. There is something in our debut EP ‘Imbalance’ for everyone no matter what you like from heavy music. My friend is telling me to also say ‘folk glam rock’ so I will have to say that too. Tom: I’d say, busy. There’s always something happening. We try to combine the funnest elements of heavier music, there’s some softer parts, some dancier parts, and some heavy as anything parts. Declan: I would say that patient sixty seven is a blend of a couple genre’s. We’re definately on the metalcore side of things with our riffing and such. But we add that electronic feel in certain parts. We want to add a little bit of something for everyone in our music
How would you say the sound of Patient Sixty-Seven has grown/changed since you first started out?
Jarryd: We are definitely getting more technical with some new material. Us all growing as musicians we are working together and writing new material that I am really excited for people to finally hear. Declan: Obviously as a new band we were expecting our sound to change and progress along the way. I would say our sound is maturing – as each of us are improving as musicians on the journey. A more polished and melodic sound has come about! Tom: And just generally improving, it’s all forming up nicely and coming together!
Touring wise, what are you getting up to this year?
Jarryd: We have some amazing shows ready for this year, supporting confession at YMCA HQ is an absolute honour and playing a double stage fundraiser for the recent bushfires in the south of WA on the 14th of February, that will be a great show. Can’t wait for it! Tom: There’s some shows coming up we’re looking forward to announcing! And we’re hoping to visit some new places in the near future!
Can you give us a couple of personal touring highlights since your formation?
Jarryd: Every show is so much fun to play. But the two that stand out for me is the time we played with Hand of Mercy and Void of Vision, been a HoM fan for such a long time so to support them on their final Australian tour was a dream come true. And the Imbalance EP launch was something special. I am never going to forget how elated I felt when I stepped off the stage. Tom: Our EP launch was incredible. I also won’t forget our first shows together as a full lineup- we supported Emberville for their Purify Single launch shows at HQ and Babushka. It was just such a relief to see our work come together, and sure – we were nervous as heck! But it just felt insane being up there playing music with those guys. Declan: Ahh, to me the christmas party gig at amps was insane! The crowd was just fantastic, stage divers and moshing and crowd shouts. It doesn’t get much better than that to me.
How does a song normally come together for Patient Sixty-Seven?
Tom: Just through the exchange of ideas! Everyone has a part to play. Early on myself and Dylan would just sort of form song ideas between us and build on them, with the EP it was very much a back and forth process between ourselves – however when JL and Jarryd joined we were able to get their ideas on board and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table for future releases!
What can you tell us about the themes & influences behind your most recent EP ‘Imbalance’?
Tom: It covers a few different themes. It’s really about looking in the mirror and understanding the things that make us, us. We aren’t perfect, and we shouldn’t try to be. It’s easy to be caught up in trying to be something we aren’t, or forcing ourselves to meet expectations from ourselves or others – and I suppose ‘Imbalance’ refers to that struggle. Internally, it’s so easy to get lost in that sort of self-depreciating struggle where we can’t find a happy medium for ourselves. How we deal with that has had a huge affect on me, and it’s easy to get weighed down by all of it, so Imbalance for me is just about saying, fuck it – this is who I am. I’ll be better, but for the right reasons, and for me – if nothing else.
Are you currently working on any new material for a full album, if so what can your fans can expect from it?
Tom: New material is on the way! You’ll certainly hear new music in 2016 – expect a bigger and better Patient Sixty-Seven – that I can promise you. Declan: For sure, we already have an abundance of ideas coming together, obviously we’re just seeing what we’re capable of. The stuff we have come up with so far has been very exciting and we cant wait to share it with everyone!
Also, how did the album artwork for the ‘Imbalance’ EP come together, and what does it mean to you?
Tom: The artwork sums up the themes we really tried to cover throughout Imbalance. The separation of the water leading to the lighthouse, it just seemed to fit. We also thought of the dark/light contrast and tried to balance it out appropriately – no pun intended.
What is the music scene like to be a part of in Perth?
Tom: Massive! I love playing with so many amazing acts across our state. The amount of talent down here is unbelievable. Jarryd: Being a part of the Perth scene is amazing. So many amazing bands are apart of it. Emberville, Havoc, Cloak & Dagger and Moments are just some amazing bands that we have become good friends with. Give them a listen if you haven’t already.
What sets you are apart from other upcoming bands?
Tom: We’re all heart, we never leave anything out there. Since getting in the rehearsal room in January last year, we have worked as hard as we can to branch out to anyone who wants to hear us. And we won’t stop trying. If you’re a fan of music – we’ll be there waiting, haha! In all honestly, we’re still figuring all of that out, and that makes it all the more exciting to me. Declan: I’d say we definately have a unique style, we try to stay away from trying to just be a ‘trendy’ band, we just write what sounds good to us. Jarryd: There are so many textbook answers I can give to this question. What I will say though is come down to a show and see for yourself. Being on stage is the best, and we take no show for granted putting in 110% into everything we do. The proof is in the pudding as the kids say.
What else can we expect to see from Patient Sixty-Seven in 2016?
Tom: More shows, music, merchandise etc! Just a lo t of new content building on what was honestly such an amazing 2015. Thank you to every single person who has supported us in any way. It means so much to us all. Jarryd: We have some groovy plans in the works so far. A couple of shows, a couple of songs. The sky’s the limit for us. Going to be a good year for patient that’s for sure.
