Ray BLK has been crowned the winner of BBC Music Sound of 2017. The singer and rapper came above the likes of Brits Critics Choice winner Rag’n’Bone Man and hotly-tipped urban artist Raye- who came in second and third, respectively.
The 22-year-old from Catford joins an impressive list of previous victors including Adele, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith. Here’s what she had to say about her victory:
“Winning the BBC Sound of 2017 has to be the most surprising thing that’s happened to me thus far.”
Ray BLK (her surname stands for Building Living Knowing) released mini-album ‘Durt’ in October 2016, which featured collaborations with Wretch 32, SG Lewis and Mercury prize winner Stormzy. Having already been dubbed “the Lauryn Hill of the UK’ and gaining a nomination for Best Newcomer at this year’s MOBO Awards, the artist looks set for success in 2017.
