Review: Simian Mobile Disco – ‘Welcome to Sideways’

Reigning from the success of their last studio album, ‘Whorl’, and a spout of additional releases, not to mention some time on the road, Simian Mobile Disco have returned with their brand new album ‘Welcome To Sideways’.

The album brings together a plethora of elements. The minimal techno-licked release incorporates plenty of technical synth work jam packed with luscious arpeggios and melodies; keeping a consistent vibe throughout with its hard hitting four-on-the-floor kick drum patterns.

‘Welcome to Sideways’ hits you like a giant wall of sound filled to the brim with its wonky spiralling bleeps and bloops. The whirring electronic melodies, ranging similarly an old robot booting up or a well-oiled machine, add dramatically to its industrial feel. Although many industrial and harder hitting tracks comprise this album, the downtime is welcomed. This release has the ability to manifest its self in many moods. From an eerie late night at the club with its more DJ ready pieces to long summer days with its more sweet and mellow tracks. This album has an enormous playability.

Like a wave washing over you from start to finish, being penetrated only by its tight side chained kick drums, this record feels much like a celestial journey through space and time – much like the one Simian Mobile Disco were on during its creation. Beginning slow and picking up in the middle, becoming more distorted and chaotic, with tracks like, ‘Staring At All This Handle’ and ‘Face To Face With Spoon’, the album plays out and winds down bringing a sweet sense of accomplishment.

Each track retains a similar structure – repetitive but by no means a chore – it’s easy to get lost in this one so buckle up, hit play, and enjoy the ride.

The album consists of 9 tracks all of which complement each other tremendously and concludes with an hour-long mix with some alternate versions and edits. Simian Mobile Disco will be making their next live appearance at London’s Village Underground on Friday 27th January 2017.
