Tom Petty’s hometown has named a park in his honour

A park in Gainesville, Florida has been renamed in honour of its late hometown hero, Tom Petty.

Friends, family, and fans of the singer gathered for the dedication ceremony of Tom Petty Park on Saturday, October 20th on what would have been Petty’s 68th birthday.

The Gainsville Sun reported that Petty’s family addressed crowds at the event.

Bruce Petty, the late rocker’s brother, spoke of the park’s significance: “My brother and I grew up in this park. We played as kids. My cousin reminded me the other day of my remark that it was a sanctuary, and it really was.”

Last month, Tom Petty’s own ode to his hometown was shared, in the form of a previously unreleased track from 1998, “Gainesville” – check it out above.
