Watch Ed Sheeran talk about overcoming his stutter in this heartfelt speech

An old video of Ed Sheeran from 2015 has resurfaced online. The clip shows the singer-songwriter speaking out about his past troubles with stuttering.

After being honoured at the American Institute for Stuttering’s Freeing Voices Changing Lives Benefit Gala, Ed gave a heartfelt speech regarding his problems with stuttering. Being very open about his stutter, Sheeran was more than happy to speak at the event. Invited by Emily Blunt, who has also conquered the disorder, he knew he would be giving a speech, but not receiving a reward.

During his speech Sheeran joked stating; “I was a very, very weird child. Very weird child. And I had a port-wine stain birthmark on my face that I got lasered off when I was very young, and one day they forgot to put the anaesthetic on, and then ever since then I had a stutter. And I also had very, very big blue NHS glasses. And I lacked an ear drum on one side of my face—one side of my ear—so stuttering was actually the least of my problems when I went to school

He followed on to explain how music helped his condition and explained that kids with disabilities, or any quirks and weirdness for that matter, have nothing to be worried about.

I want to stress the point that stuttering is not a thing you have to be worried about at all, and even if you have quirks and weirdness, you shouldn’t be worried about that… I was telling Emily earlier that one of the cool kids from school now does my plumbing. So that’s a fact!

Sheeran finished his heartwarming and emotional speech by encouraging kids to just be themselves. “Just be yourself, embrace your quirks—being weird is a wonderful thing“.
