Watch Johnny Marr perform ‘This Charming Man’ alone for the first time

On the final date of his 2018 solo tour, Johnny Marr gave the small crowd at his intimate show in London a charming surprise.

The co-songwriter and guitarist of The Smiths’ paid tribute to the band by performing their 1984 hit, ‘This Charming Man’, live as a solo artist for the first time.

At the end of his set, he asked the crowd if they had any requests.

As a joke, he began playing the Steve Miller Band’s ‘Fly Like An Eagle’, before teasing ‘This Charming Man’.

Reacting to the crowd’s raucous response to the first lines the iconic guitarist said: “that was like a mass panic attack – an English indie panic attack. Man, I’m just fucking with you”.

In an unexpected turn of events, Marr performed the track in its entirety for the audience.
