What is the meaning behind Billie Eilish’s new single, ‘wish you were gay’?

Billie Eilish’s distinctive vocals and candid lyrics have seen her skyrocket in popularity since she first released music back in 2016.

Now, the rising star is gearing up to drop her highly anticipated debut album WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? on March 29th.

But her most recent single from the release, ‘wish you were gay’, might prompt some questions about the track’s title and lyrics, but Eilish has already opened up about the meaning behind the song.

PopBuzz recently reposted footage Eilish posted on an Instagram story back in July, directly addressing fans to regale the story behind the track.

“I wrote this song about a guy that really was not interested in me and it made me feel horrible so the song is called ‘wish you were gay’.” She explained, “and that’s so not meant to be offensive in any way. It literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason.

“and guess what he just came out to me like a couple weeks ago”. She then joked: “so I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude. I’m fucking proud bro except not really though because I was really into him, like so into him, he’s so hot oh my god.”
