Hot on the heels of her critically-acclaimed sixth studio album Pure Katie, Canadian singer-songwriter Katie Dauson makes a triumphant return with her boldest offering yet — the radiant new single “That Volcano.” Premiering today on Music Crowns, the track is a rock-driven, surf-tinged yacht rock anthem that shimmers with both playful energy and emotional depth.
Initially conceived while spinning a well-loved vinyl of Jimmy Buffett’s greatest hits, Dauson found herself captivated by the colorful, parrot-adorned album art — a spark that would ignite the creative flame for “That Volcano.” What started as a breezy, tropical tune quickly evolved into something far more personal.
“I thought I was just writing a cute song about a parrot,” Dauson shares. “But when I was rehearsing it before recording, I realised I’d actually written about myself, and all the people who’ve tried to tell me I’m not good enough.”
This revelation gives the single its true fire. Beneath its sunny guitar licks and shimmering production lies a cathartic narrative of resilience, self-worth, and the powerful act of shaking off doubt. With the crisp strum of her beloved 2002 left-handed Martin OM-18V acoustic guitar and the expert touch of longtime collaborator James Nickle — who handled production, engineering, mixing, and mastering — Dauson delivers a vibrant yet vulnerable performance.
Bringing even more life to the single is a vivid animated music video, helmed by acclaimed Toronto-based animator Joren Cull. Known for his delightfully surreal and whimsical aesthetic, Cull reunites with Dauson following their previous collaboration on Freaky Vampire Blues. This time, the animation dives headfirst into the song’s tropical imagery, weaving a colourful, surreal story that feels both joyful and cathartic.
“I love how well this music video perfectly captures the essence of my song, That Volcano,” Dauson says. “It’s a beautifully whimsical interpretation that I hope viewers and listeners will connect with.”
With “That Volcano,” Katie Dauson once again proves why she’s a voice to be reckoned with — blending authenticity, artistry, and an undeniable knack for turning the unexpected into pure sonic joy.
