5 German Eurovision entries that did well

Germany may have only topped the top of the Eurovision Song Contest twice during their time in the competition, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t had more than their fair share of successful entries. Betway Online Casino have recently been looking at some interesting Eurovision Stats to share with their audiences. For example, did you know that when German won with Ein Bisschen Frieden in 1982 their 161 total points was an impressive 78.9% of the possible points available – pretty good going by anyone’s standards.

Margot Hielscher

You can’t possibly mention Germany doing well at Eurovision without a mention of Margot Hielscher, who entered the competition two years in a row. Her song “Telefon, Telefon” put her in 4th place in 1957. She entered again in 19588, this time coming in 7th place with “Für Zwei Groschen Musik”

Nicole

Germany has competed in every single Eurovision Song Contest since the competition started, so when they won in 1982 many German fans felt it was about time. The year that Nicole won with her “Ein bißchen Frieden” song there was no semi-finals and as such the country went straight to the finals. Of course, they have done this since 1999 and the introduction of the big-five anyway, thanks to their financial contribution towards the competition.

Lena

Germany won the competition again in 2010, where Lena scored 246 points with their song “Satellite”. For a few years before 2010, the country had opted to have English language songs as their Eurovision entry and Lena’s song was no exception. Hoping to replicate her 2010 success Lena went on to enter the competition again in 2011 with “Taken By a Stranger”. She finished in a respectable 10th place with a total of 107 points.

Lena Valaitis

That Lena isn’t the only one to do well for Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest. Back in 1981, Lena Valaitis entered the competition with Johnny Blue – a German-language song that bagged her 2nd place in the competition. She managed to get an impressive 132 points and finish in 2dn place, leading the way for Nicole to top the leader board the next year.

Michal Schulte

Over recent years German have failed to do as well as in the past with the Eurovision Entries, even Cascada in 2013 failed to land them a place in the top 20! However, despite previous positions of 26 and 27, the 2018 entry by Michael Schulte put Germany once again in the top 5. ‘You Let Me Walk Alone’ bagged the country a total of 340 points.

Unfortunately for Germany, 2022 saw them achieve just 6 points and so they’ll probably have their thinking caps on to see how this can be improved next year. As part of the Big Five they make a significant financial contribution and as such automatically qualify for the finals, but they probably want to restore their reputation and do well again next year – let’s see what they bring to the table.
