Ultimate guilty pleasure…
Justin Timberlake – ‘Cry Me A River‘
Nigel: “Musically? Justin Timberlake for damn sure. He’s a fuckin badarse that lad! Yeah it’s Pop, but the writing is unreal, the grooves are savage and there’s hooks for days. Got to see him once in Dublin and it’s one of the best gig i’ve ever been to.“
Nightwish – ‘I Wish I Was an Angel‘
Lizzie: “Nightwish – ‘I Wish I Was an Angel’. Look I know, but it’s so damn catchy! I’m a bit of a eurovision fan and this takes me straight to that overproduced stage with a Viking beating a hide of some kind.“
Bronski Beat – ‘Small Town Boy‘
Barry: “It has to be Small Town Boy by Bronski Beat. Although it’s hardly a guilty pleasure as I listen to the age of consent so much. It’s one of the first electronic songs I ever remember really loving and the lyrics are fairly crushing.“
Best new track you’ve heard in the last few months…
Tigercub – ‘Control‘
NK: “The way i’d hope Rock music would go after Soulwax came out with Much Against Everyones Advice.“
Japanese Breakfast – ‘Road Ahead‘
LF: “I just love the build up at the chorus, it leaves me in utter bliss.“
Bad Bones – ‘You‘
Barry: “A track called ‘You’ by Bad Bones. Love the samples and darkness of it. I have no idea how you make that music.“
A song from your favourite recently discovered band…
Tigercub – ‘Control’
NK: “I heard this band on Spotify about a month ago and I can’t stop listening to them. They haven’t a bad song and I have no idea why they aren’t a global phenomenon.“
Frankie Cosmos – ‘If I Had a Dog‘
LF: “Perfect chill vibes for roaming.”
Black Marble – ‘Woods‘
Barry: “If recent means last few years then a song called Woods by Black Marble. Really cool low fi band where most songs are based around bass. It’s a more synthy song and I love the cold feeling it gives me. Nice and minimal.“
A song you wish you wrote…
Soulwax – ‘Much Against Everyone’s Advice‘
NK: “Banger of a track on an album full of bangers. I love this band and i particularly love them at this point in their career. They have gone on to do amazing things since then but this song, this album left an indelible mark on me musically.I have the worst memory and can’t remember much of my life, but i remember hearing this for the first time being played by who was essentially the Irish John Peel (Uaneen Fitzsimons) on the radio. It was late at night and I had school in the morning but I couldn’t sleep afterwards.“
The Knife – ‘We Share Our Mother’s Health‘
LF: “Such a ridiculously intense melodic song. I just love how aggressive it gets without usual methods. Makes me speed walk down the street mouthing manically.“
Men Without Hats – ‘Safety Dance‘
Barry: “No matter how shite I feel, it’ll put me in good form when I hear it. That’s solid songwriting.”
A track from the best band to come out of your hometown (yourselves not included)…
Fehdah – ‘Like No Other‘
NK: “This song develops beautifully and articulately from the moment it starts to it’s massive Jon Hopkins ending. A song like this shouldn’t make sense but it does and it sums up the musical talent that is Fehdah (now Feather) perfectly. It takes an amazing songwriter to write a song like this and that is exactly what she is!“
Floor Staff – ‘Saviour‘
LF: “Anthony Donnelly has crafted some glorious solemn pop songs in his first release.“
Hope Is Noise – ‘Stare At Bridges Burned‘
Barry: “Hope Is Noise are a great band from Cork. They have a song called ‘Stare At Bridges Burned’. It’s a banger. Was meant to play it live with them one time but I couldn’t play it haha. So we went with something else on the night.“
You spend years at a job you hate with a boss that sucks and the day finally comes that you hand in your notice. Which song is blaring in the background?
Queens of The Stone Age – ‘Tension Head‘
NK: “What do you need to say about this? Envision telling your boss to fuck off and slamming the door behind you as that riff starts. Then it narrates your journey perfectly as you spend the last of your wages down the pub in one last, care-free blow-out before you wake up realising you’ve made a huge mistake.“
Donna Summer – ‘I Love The Nightlife‘
LF: “I generally sing this to myself most days.“
Perturbator – ‘Femme Fatale‘
Barry: “I actually handed in my notice last week and I was listening to Femme Fatale by Perturbator as I slightly changed the google “handing in your notice” template hahaha.”
Bitch Falcon are asked to star in a reality TV show that documents your lives. What’s the theme tune?
Divine – ‘I’m So Beautiful‘
LF: “Obviously the lyrics speak for me on this one.“
Youssou N’Dour – ‘7 Seconds‘ ft. Neneh Cherry
Barry: “Defo the song ‘7 Seconds’ by Youssou N’Dour as that’s how long that show would probably last.“
A track of your own that you’re the most proud of…
Bitch Falcon – ‘TMJ‘
NK: “You haven’t heard them yet but maybe ‘Panther’ or ‘Prime Number’. The arrangements are some of the best we’ve written so far. I was (and still am) listening to a lot of Mark Guilana when this was developing and the drums for one of the pre-choruses in ‘Prime Number’ was directly inspired by him. Not that the drums are anywhere close to that on a technical level but the hi-hat pattern vs snare was a little nod to him.“
LF: “‘TMJ’, the first time I wrote a sing-along chorus and It’s so cool to see people sing it back at gigs“
Barry: “‘Panther’, It’s a banger. Wrote before I was in the band but defo my favourite to play and it’s yet to be released.“
