Beautiful Sadness. New EP from Scottish instrumental prog-rockers Three Days From Retirement

Can sad things be beautiful? Maybe. When it comes to the music from Scottish progressive instrumental rock band Three Days From Retirement the answer is definitely yes.

They just released their new EP “If We Keep Walking Eventually We’ll Fall Off”. I call this album “If You Keep Listening Eventually You’ll Fall In Love”, because this set of new sounds from them are sounds to fall in love with, with no return. This new EP sounds like the sequel to their last release, the single “What Is Dead May Never Die”, with progressive, instrumental tracks, music which breathez, not suffocates like traditional radio tunes. 3DFR songs are not just music, they are more of an art, squashed into sound. The band take no prisoners and do not seem to compromise with anything. It’s just a pure flow of sound-shaped emotions, with the same level of excitement and astonishment of Pink Floyd’s albums.

“Shatner’s Rhapsody” is one of the saddest pieces of music I’ve ever heard, but like said before, it’s at the same time so beautiful, and so magical. Bear in mind it’s instrumental music, which in this case seems like an advantage. “By The Power Of Greyskull”, the shortest song on the EP, takes us to the world of prog-rock, jazz and emo-rock. “Spooky Action Across Distance”, another long suite, contains some vocals! This is new territory for the band, but I think they were necessary in here, because it’s not singing, more like a spoken word, with a message! “Use fear as your fuel and nothing will ever hold you back again”. It all sounds dreamy, like the aforementioned Pink Floyd, or maybe even more like David Gilmour’s solo tracks.

The power or 3DFR’s music is their progressive mechanism, every song starts off very quiet and shy, songs developing into loud, guitar clamouring anthems. It’s all about emotions on “If We Keep Walking Eventually We’ll Fall Off”, but if comes to this band, it always was about emotions.
