A five piece band from the US with a clear love of their genre, Shotgun Holler are bringing back bluegrass. Their new album ‘Loaded’, accompanied by single ‘Out in the Parking Lot’, is out now and getting some great reviews – and it’s easy to understand why.
Too often, independent bands with a ‘rustic’ sound take the concept too far, and the results come out sounding hurried, rough or badly recorded. However, it’s possible to sound traditional and rustic while maintaining production standards and keeping things sounding clean. A traditional feel should all be inherent in the musicianship and composition, not in a dirty sounding recording.
Thankfully, Shotgun Holler fall into the former camp, skilfully negotiating the tricks and flicks of a genre that it’s difficult to get right. The result is a solid, enjoyable album that puts them in good stead going forward.
