‘Downtown’ compilation album from Folkstock Records

A small label with a big reputation for finding new talent, Folkstock Records have won many plaudits – including glowing write-ups from the national press – for their work in finding a new generation of British folk talent. Their latest venure, tied in with this month’s London Folk and Roots Festival, sees them release a ten track compilation album featuring 8 artists they will be showcasing at the festival.

The album, above, is available for sale from the Folkstock website, and demonstrates a wide range approaches to the folk genre. Some artists, such as the much heralded Kelly Oliver, bridge the gap between pop and roots. Others are more traditional, evoking a more raw, alternative feel. If that sounds of interest, there is also an opportunity to grab the album for free – simply sent Folkstock proof that you’ve purchased tickets for the gigs below, and they’ll sort you a free copy of the album. You can find more details here.

It will be more than worth it to take up that option, as the two gigs Folkstock are putting on this month are shaping up to be great. Part of the London Folk and Roots event, the two gigs will take place at The Islington on November 4th and 11th respectively.

First up,the ‘Alt Country’ showcase at The Islington on 4th November is headlined by Cambridge band Fred’s House and features Marina Florance from Norfolk, Kaity Rae from London and another Cambrige act, Ben Smith.

Kelly Oliver is headlining the all female ‘Folk’ evening on 11th November at The Islington. Joining her are Minnie Birch from Hemel Hempstead, Daria Kulesh from Kings Langley and Zoe Wren from London, currently studying music at Cambridge University. All the acts have impressive stories to tell and songs to sing and are worthy of a national platform.
