BBC Three Counties Presenter, Gareth Lloyd invited ‘Josephine and the Artizans’ to perform a live session including ‘Prioritise’.
‘Josephine and The Artizans’ have been generating buzz and challenging perceptions with their unique fusion sound, and now officially release their second single ‘Prioritise’. ‘Prioritise’ is a digital release and will be available to download for free on the 26th February at josephineandtheartizans.bandcamp.com
Dubbed with ‘introducing the real classical crossover’ to ‘an audience craving something dramatic and different’ by Absolute British Music Blog, ‘Josephine and The Artizans’ marry classical music written some two centuries ago with hip- hop and rock.
‘Prioritise’ incorporates Beethoven’s infamous ‘Moonlight Sonata’ melody and Mahler’s Symphony No.5. Josephine uses her pop vocal style instead of her classical voice in this single to show the extent of the band’s diversity.
As Unsigned Magazine highlight ‘We’re not talking about a hip-hop song that samples some classical music’ Josephine and The Artizans have mastered this challenging task of bringing the classical to the modern through ‘original compositions and as authentic a blend of genres as you are likely to ever come across’ – demonstrating their expertise in many musical genres and their completely unique position in the current landscape.
JumpinSounds Live Review at Ronnie Scotts: ‘A completely original mash-up of popular classics delivered with pop sensibilities, fused with real grass roots hip hop and melded with the angelic vocals of the group’s eponymous leader, Josephine. Josephine and The Artizans’ performance was a truly unique live experience.’
Fresh of the back of the release ‘Josephine and The Artizans’ confirm a flurry of live dates in the coming months including a show at one of London’s most prestigious venues, Ronnie Scotts and Whisky Mist; Shoreditch’s trendy venues Bar Music Hall and Floripa and Brixton’s Hootananny.

About: ‘Josephine and The Artizans’ are a 11 piece band that fuse classical with hip-hop and rock and consist of three rap lyricists, string trio, drummer, guitarist, bassist, backing vocalist and lead classical singer Josephine Permaul. Josephine founded the band at Westminster University, where she studied with one remaining member, Gregory Madge (guitarist). After graduation they decided to continue and as Josephine recruited new members the concept of their sound became increasingly stronger and ideas began to blend. Every member has different musical influences and techniques in specific genres, however the willingness to adapt and merge their skills has created something which is a far cry from any generic musical genres in existence
