Introducing: Jango Music

Jango

Based in La Plaine Sur Mer, France, Jango Music has quickly become one of the scenes most respected and renowned record labels, thanks to their determination and ethos of only releasing great quality and groovy House records. Headed by Damon Grey, Jango has homed records from industry heavyweights such as Robbie Rivera, Roger Sanchez, Luca Debonaire and My Digital Enemy amongst others. We had the opportunity to sit down with Damon and have a chat about the label.

Hi, thanks for taking time to sit down and chat to us about your exciting new label Jango Music. To get things kicked off, can you tell about the idea behind starting the label?

I started Jango Music 3 years ago and the main idea I had was to create a label that’s different from the other labels in the business. At Jango we want to give both upcoming artists/producers as well as established artist the opportunity to release great music. We don’t want to only sign artists/producers that have a huge following and an established fan base because we only want to sign great music – a great track is a great track no matter if it’s by a known artist or an unknown artist. We see Jango Music as a family where we always try to push our artists to evolve to the best of their ability.

What are you goals/what do you strive to accomplish with the label?

Our main goal is and will always be to release great music that works for both the dancefloors and as music that you want to listen to when you need an extra kick in your everyday life. Our secondary goal is to become a respected and established label like Sony Music or Spinnin’ Records.

From the moment you decided to start a label, how long did it take for the label
to be launched?

It took me roughly 3 months to set up the company and record label.

For those who don’t know, what is involved in the setting up of a record label?

It’s like any normal business – you need some funds and contacts with distributors, plus it’s a huge bonus if you already have some producers that want to work with you.

What day-to-day work is involved in running a record label?

The day-to-day work is listening to demos that we receive from artist and producers, setting up release schedules for upcoming tracks, planning the new Jango Tour for the upcoming year, working on social media exposure and other marketing strategies, having close contacts with distributors all around the world and last of all tones of paperwork 😉

How many people work at the label and what are their roles?

For now it’s me and our label assistant, Michael Murica.

How would you describe the sound of Jango Music and why did you choose this musical direction?

At Jango Music we release all forms of House music – Deep, Progressive, Future etc. Our mantra is WeStand4Groove so as long as a House track is groovy and is overall a great track, we will release it.
So far you have had artists such as Robbie Rivera, Roger Sanchez, Luca Debonaire and My Digital Enemy release on the label, can we expect any of the artists that have previously released on the label make a return?
We have had the great fortune of having many great artists on the label and we’re working hard to sign both bigger and smaller artists, so yes, some of them will return. It’s our dream to sign and release records from artists like Todd Terry and Kerri Chandler amongst others. A landmark for the label has been working alongside vocalist Steve Edwards who is collaborating with me, Ron Carroll and Michael Murica. Steve has worked with artists like Bob Sinclar and Axwell among others so that was a big moment for us.

What can we expect in terms of new music from the label in the near future?

We started our two new sub labels Jango X and Jango Deep that are more focused on Tech House and Deep House, and in the near future we will try and push the label to more commercial markets and also focus more on radio.

Can we expect to see any new artists join your emerging roster in the near
future?

Of course, at Jango we always trying to find new artists and give them an opportunity to release great music. There are so many talented producers out there that don’t get signed due to not having a huge following. At Jango we always give new artists a chance.

What other plans do you have in mind for the months ahead?

Our focus for the next few months is closing our residency at Bora Bora Ibiza and Amsterdam Dance Event were we’re going to have three label parties at Majectis in Dam Square.
