The Jinx – Black Magic

The Jinx

THE JINX was born John C. Bellamy III (Changed to Sean Daniel Lacy the same year) on August 4th, 1983 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

After birth, The Jinx was relocated to Los Angeles, California (Inglewood), where he spent his time as a child in the early to late 80’s, but was later relocated back to Charlotte, NC with his parents, due to the violence and rioting at the time.

He is the only child of his mother, Rainni, and Danny Lacy (Deceased) former Marine of the USMC, who died when Jinx was 10 years old. After the death of his father, The Jinx wrote poetry privately for himself to deal with the pain of his loss. His 5th grade teacher from school who read his work said that he should pursue writing poetry as a career.

Jinx states that although he loved poetry, it wasn’t something he wanted to do full-time. As he developed his craft, The Jinx turned to hip-hop as a way for him to express his feelings in song form.

Donning the name “The Jinx” he says that the name comes from his hardships and bad luck throughout his life and that he felt like it was drawn to him at that time. Now he jokingly states that it has had a different meaning as far as his rivals in the industry.

The Jinx states that he was well-educated as a youth, saying that his mother exposed him to a plethora of historically-important literary works, many genres of music, and how to speak professional and in public.

As a teenager, Jinx was involved in extra-curricular activities such as football, basketball, playing chess, singing with a choir and sculpture. Jinx states, “I had so much going on, I didn’t know what to do.”

Jinx initially listens to hip-hop, but generally listens to alternative rock, hard rock and classical (at a low level) when sleeping. To help start his creative engine, his grandfather eventually bought Jinx an acoustic guitar which he tuned and started creating his own chords. The moment of truth came when it was his time to record a song over 2Pac’s instrumental “All Eyez On Me” on cassette tape in 1996.

Jinx and 2 friends from his local middle school spun the instrumental on the 1’s and 2’s” and started recording their version in the living room. They made approximately 100 copies and dropped them on the school the next day with approval and praise the whole year. The Jinx says until that moment, at 13 years old; he never felt so much emotion in my life since my father passed. That is when he knew he was going to do this for the rest of his life.”

From this point, Jinx listened to what seemed like every artist, to every genre, just to find somewhere to place himself in the gray area and as he got better, placed himself in local rap competitions and showcases in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg county area.

By 1998, he had done shows, recorded music, and produced records with the help of a local producer and engineer. On New Years’ Eve 2002, The Jinx met Klassified, who shared the same interests and had the same goals in mind. Together they started Cheat Da Game Entertainment (CDG) which is now under the label name, MOBBY MUZIK, an indie label.

The Jinx put music on hold to “do something different” and joined the US NAVY. In 2009, he returned back to Charlotte, NC as a more cultured and disciplined man. He says “I’m glad I got the opportunity to serve my country, see the world, and meet people from all walks of life”. On his return, he once again joined Klassified and hit the ground running.

To date, they have won “2010 NORTH CAROLINA UNDERGROUND MUSIC AWARDS (NCUMA) BEST GROUP OF THE YEAR (CDG)” and nominated for the same category in 2011 with Klassified being nominated in 2012 as well. With new albums, videos, and shows slated for this year, The Jinx & Mobby Muzik look forward to giving you some of the hottest music to ever grace a playlist!
