Lex Rose

Continuing the traditions of American roots music from a new perspective, Lex Rose is quietly unassuming, yet an undeniable force to be reckoned with. With her contemporary take on classic country music combined with Tom Petty-style rock & roll and the “up-all-night” spirit of a mockingbird, the seventeen year old singer-songwriter is rapidly making a name for herself. Influenced by artists as diverse as The Henningsens and Billy Joel, Lex creates musical moments that feel like a Bible Belt summer wasted away on a childhood highway.

The twist? Lex comes from the Deep South… of England.

At the age of 15, Lex picked up her father’s left-handed 1960s Eko Ranger. After hearing The Band Perry’s hit single “If I Die Young” for the first time, she was inspired to write her first song, “Falling Leaves” – and from then on, she knew that writing and performing her own songs was what she was called to do.

Cutting her teeth on the stage of any venue that would have her, Lex booked her own shows at local bars, fundraisers and arts centres in and around her hometown of Basingstoke, Hampshire. In less than a year, the young performer went from open mic nights to festivals and BBC Introducing shows, surprising and enchanting audiences with her unique style of music.

In February 2012, Lex’s song “Am I Pretty Yet?” was selected for the demo panel on BBC Introducing Berkshire with Linda Serck. The song was rated highly, with Serck saying “For me, it’s an achingly beautiful plaintive song.

It’s a very simple song, but it really grabs you with its sentiment and its lyrics”. Despite being pitted against 2 professionally produced tracks by much older acts, “Am I Pretty Yet?” ultimately won out, and was played in full live on air.

Lex’s talent didn’t go unnoticed by the judges of the VO5 Express Yourself song contest either. Having entered her original song “11:59″, she was voted by fans into the finals, in November 2012. She won, securing a slot at the prestigious Isle of Wight Festival in 2013, alongside acts like Bonnie Raitt and Fun. One of the judges, Ellis Rich (former International Manager at EMI), described her as “talented and striking – a worthy winner.” The prize also included a nationwide television campaign with VO5, which is currently in the works.

Already drawing interest from Nashville-based record labels, management companies, and songwriters and artists in the UK and the US, it looks like 2013 will be a huge year for Lex Rose – especially with her debut EP release expected in the spring.
