Mollie Marriott precedes spring album with new single

There’s a lot of enthusiasm out there at the moment (BBC sessions, mentions in the Daily Star, Music Week playlist) for the new single from Mollie Marriott, and it’s not difficult to see why. ‘Transformer’, out now, can be heard here:

‘Transformer’ is a superbly produced, languid ballad which keeps things slow without overly schmaltzing it up, and follows up the also good previous single ‘Ship of Fools’. It’s been a long time coming in terms of a solo career for Marriott, who has been working as a backing vocalist for some of the top names in the UK over the years – and when we say top names, we mean it. Paul Weller, Ronnie Wood and Mark Knofler have all benefitted from her powerful vocal talents, but now it’s Mollie Marriott’s turn to step out front.

It doesn’t hurt that she descends from Brit music royalty (her father was front man of the Small Faces Steve Marriott, and her step father is Joe Brown) and that she already has a few friends in the entertainment industry – actor Danny Dyer for instance shows up in the video above.

But, if Mollie Marriatt makes an impact, it won’t be from nepotism or glad handing. Her vocal talents make sure of that.
